The majority of the restaurant suggestions on this site are primarily focused in the West Coast. The main reason for this is simply due to my location. However, anytime I have an opportunity to highlight restaurants across Canada that offer gluten-free options, I’m excited to do so.
I’ve been to Halifax numerous times, but I have never come across The Wooden Monkey. One of our visitors brought this unique establishment to my attention and I’m glad they did.
The Wooden Monkey pays particular attention to not only the type of foods they serve, but the quality. They provide only local, organic and free trade ingredients for all their dishes.
Their menu clearly indicates all items which are gluten-free and/or vegetarian. From what I have been told, the gluten-free pizza is terrific!
It’s been a little over a year since I’ve had a chance to visit Halifax, but I can’t wait to go back and try the Wooden Monkey.

Charm Modern Thai is a fantastic thai restaurant with a fun modern twist. Located in Yaletown, Charm gladly welcomes anyone with Celiac Disease and gluten sensitivities. Although traditional Thai cuisine is naturally gluten-free, not all menu items here are so. However, many items are, or can easily be modified to meet the gluten-free requirements.
Charm suggests calling in advance so they can offer more options when you arrive. But even if you just happened to be walking by, they still have options they can serve.
Chef Tiffany recommends asking for her so she can talk to you about eating a safe gluten-free meal.

Irashai Grill in Coal Harbour (Vancouver) provides delicious Japanese cuisine in a funky, modern atmosphere. A common source of gluten in Japanese food and sushi is the artificial crab. Irashai proudly promotes the fact that all seafood in the restaurant is real, fresh and wild!
Not all menu items are gluten free (obviously avoid any tempura), so be sure to let your server know about your gluten-free needs. Staff here is very accommodating and can easily meet the gluten-free dietary needs.
Irashai suggests asking to speak to Eugene (Manager) as he is most familiar with gluten-free.

I have always considered the idea of opening a restaurant in Vancouver that is naturally 100% gluten-free. Until now, I believed I would be the first. But this was before I came across Gorilla Food. This restaurant is not only gluten-free and safe for those with Celiac Disease, but it is entire Vegan-friendly and raw.
They have great menu options including some delicious desserts. This is a great place for anyone who can’t have gluten and dairy but really want to satisfy their sweet tooth!

Considering most Chinese food contains or uses soya sauce, it’s fantastic to see Asian restaurants that can accommodate celiac disease and gluten intolerance.
Wild Rice is a unique, modern Chinese restaurant in Vancouver. The great thing about this place is their incredible awareness and ability to accommodate to many allergies and food sensitivities. Not only do they have a separate Gluten-Free menu (upon request), but they also have garlic-free and onion-free options for those who are allergic. The staff is very knowledgeable and willing to make any adaptations necessary. Wild Rice also plans to release a new main menu in the near future which will be roughly 80% gluten-free!
