Gluten-free baking is truly a science and an art. Although I’m a pretty good cook when it comes to gluten-free living, I have not yet mastered baking. So I’m happy when I find more and more gluten-free bakeries popping up across Canada. Wild Earth Bakery & Cafe is a place I have yet to visit, but here’s what I have been told:

“Wild Earth Bakery is a 100% nut-free bakery that specializes in gluten-free baking that is fresh and delicious. The variety of cakes, cookies, breads and squares is overwhelming – a true Celiac paradise. The cafe also features gluten-free light meals such as soups, sandwiches and salads.

Celebration cakes (birthdays, anniversaries and weddings) are also a primary focus.

Many of the products are also Vegan for those with multiple allergies, and a new line of sugar-free is emerging for those that are Diabetic or looking to eat more healthy.” (Anonymous User)

Food Basics is another great alternative to the expensive specialty grocery stores. Here you can find a wide selection of gluten free products. Although there may not be a completely gluten-free section, you can find what you’re looking for throughout the store. You may have to do a bit of label-reading, but it can be worth it sometimes to save the extra money. We all no that gluten-free eating is not cheap! Sorry Canada, Food Basics is only on Ontario.

Living a gluten free lifestyle can not only seem overwhelming, but it can also get expensive. Sure, there is a small tax break for those diagnosed with celiac disease. But that doesn’t really make it any cheaper.
NoFrills is a great option to help alleviate the cost of eating gluten free. You can pick up many GF products such as canned foods (like tuna and tomatoes), or certain snacks (like rice chips and crackers).
The savings can add up quickly! Just be prepared to do some label-reading.

Safeway does not specialize in gluten-free products. However, I have noticed that they are beginning to offer more products that cater to celiac needs. In particular, the recent addition of the Kinnikinnick product line is a great value.

We obtain our products locally and from all over the world, often from small, uniquely dedicated food artisans. We strive to offer the highest quality, least processed, most flavorful and naturally preserved foods. Why? Because food in its purest state — unadulterated by artificial additives, sweeteners, colorings and preservatives — is the best tasting and most nutritious food available.

Whole Foods Markets recently merged with Capers. Together they offer a wide selection of products which are gluten free.
